The school summer holidays are just a few weeks away, which means many parents will be starting to factor in the additional costs of childcare over the summer break. Managing these costs can be quite a challenge for many families, but did you know the UK government offers a Tax-Free Childcare scheme which provides some financial support?

What Do You Get?

For eligible parents, the scheme offers up to £2,000 a year per child towards childcare costs, including nursery fees, childminders, and even some holiday camps. Your child must be 11 or under and usually live with you.

How Do You Get It?

You will need to apply for and open an online Tax-Free Childcare account on the government website. For every £8 you pay into the account, the government will pay in £2. You will then use this account to pay the childcare provider. There is a quarterly cap to the top-up, which is set at £500 every three months.

Where Can You Use It?

You can use Tax-Free Childcare for all sorts of childcare, including childminders, nurseries, nannies, and after-school clubs. As long as the provider is registered with the scheme, you can use it for holiday activities too, such as sports clubs and even some holiday camps! Check the register or with the provider to see if they’re registered.

The Small Print

As with anything, you will need to check whether you are eligible to receive the benefit. If you’re already receiving benefits, be sure to check whether this will affect your existing benefits. It’s worth noting that you cannot claim tax credits, Universal Credit, or Childcare Vouchers simultaneously.
